Ian Donaldson’s attempt to qualify for his first ever National Hot Rod World Final has jumped up a gear over the winter and his Tigra A is replaced by the ex-Russell Wilcox Tigra B.

The former car is in fact doing him no harm at all and entering the winter break he sat third in points, 26 points behind Jim Cowie. In Scotland two drivers qualify for the World Final and with Billy Bonnar one-hundred-odd points clear only a disaster will stop him qualifying for the tenth time.

Round 9 at Lochgelly whilst still racing the Tigra A he took a win and two second places that put him within 2 points of Jim Cowie. By the end of Round 10 he had leap-frogged Cowie, but with former qualifiers Ian McGuigan and John Sibbald also within striking distance this could be one of the toughest series to qualify through. Having a small field of cars in Scotland also means finishing a race will attract points, so it can be difficult to take a big chuck of points off your competitors and DNF in one race can make the difference to qualification at Ipswich.

With all that in mind it is always a tough decision to ditch a successful car for a potentially better car to get that extra few tenths of seconds.
